We talk about losing connection with where the family is from, understanding the struggles of our ancestors, and recognizing the opportunity to learn family stories. Tune in for a conversation everyone can relate to on this episode of The Construction Life Podcast.
Here we are for another Cork History Invites! A couple weeks back we chatted with Devin Meireles. Devin Meireles is a creative nonfiction writer in his thirties. He was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, where growing up around the Portuguese diaspora had a profound effect on him. Now he volunteers to carry on the culture and give back to the community.
In 2022, he published a book to preserve his rich Portuguese ancestry—that was a narrative nonfiction novel about his grandparents’ immigration to Canada. He has a since written articles that have been featured in literary journals, health magazines, and cultural newspapers.
Discussing parts of the culture that we’d love to embrace (e.g., minimalism) as well as parts that we’d like to kick to the curb (e.g., the fear of impending doom that lives rent-free in our heads). And we have some hard-hitting revelations about guilt and judgment in our It’s Called Mental Health segment. We are joined by guest Devin Meireles, Luso-descendant from Toronto, Canada and author of The Portuguese Immigrant: Atlantic Heritage Story.
On this week’s episode of “Da” Podcast, Steve is joined live in studio by author Devin Meireles as they talk about Portuguese last names, ancestry and finding out one’s roots, becoming an author and writing “The Portuguese Immigrant”, not having Portuguese pride & lack of Portuguese representation, lost history, Portuguese parents, supernatural experiences, old wives tales, Portuguese guilt & cheapness, some wrestling talk and so much more!
